The Tyréns innovation, IFC Validator, eliminates non-value-creating activities related to validation of IFC deliverables in a cloud-based environment with no installed software. Validation is done by drag and drop and by checking the files content in relation to specified requirements regarding naming and coding. The result can be exported to BCF and thereby optimize the collaboration further. With this service reductions of around 45 000Euro is saved in a normal sized project running for 7 months, figures from project Sergelgatan, client Vasakronan.
The IFC format enables efficiency increases for several of operations such as calculations, planning ans hand-off if the content in the files are aligned with the requirements for the intended operation. To ensure that the files are valid they need to be reviewed and updated in relation to the result. Current validation processes require both competence and costly software to secure the files content often resulting in IFC files that cannot be used for intended purpose without time consuming retakes. The IFC validator eliminates all obstacles for the IFC files to be used for intended purpose in an efficient way.
In the projects where the IFC validator is used the stakeholders are using the following software:
AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla, MagiCAD, BIM360, BIMCollab, Solibri modelchecker
The IFC validator makes it easier to use quality assured IFC-files and is therefore contributing to reach the goals regarding, interoperability, reliable data exchanges, collaboration workflows, flexibility and sustainability
In one of the projects where the IFC validator was used, Sergelgatan the following highlights were achieved:
- 45 000Euro savings
- Consultants and architects did not have to buy Solibri or other software
- The receivers of IFC files could use the for intended operations directly
- BIM managers, consultants and architects saved time
- BIM managers, consultants and architects understood how to validate
- The client was content with the savings

The IFC validator is applicable for any size of BIM-project, it costs 1 000Euro/month for a medium sized project.
The value of digital information emerges when a specific delivery is used for the purpose it was meant for. Today this is often a time and cost consuming process since the digital deliverables frequently contain errors. The deviations are usually discovered when the file is to be used for its purpose which then requires changes in the original source of information, the design file. The consultant or architect then needs to update the design file and make a new export in order for a new attempt to use the file for what it was intended for can be made. This process keeps in going until the file works for what it was intended for. This is what one can define as non-value creating activities. These non-value creating activities are eliminated with the IFC Validator, automized and cloud based validation that enable publishing of IFC files validated for specific operations. Validation is made in relation to mandates for different phases, disciplines, formats, content and operations. Different stakeholders in the process are therefore invited to specify the information they are in need for in order to secure their operations. At the same time the design work is simplified both by clarifying the mandates and making it easy to quality assure the design and its exports in relation to them.
Putting validation into it´s context the industry have always been validating/reviewing design, relation between building components, clashes/errors in relation to other disciplines and the information related to the design. In the BIM-environment the design review is done within the design tools and the collaboration is done in collaboration tools but when it comes to validating information we lack quick and easy handled tools to do just that.
Validation must be done in relation to different types of classification systems and client specific requirements of data content. The IFC validator therefore contain project-/corparate specific templates for different kinds of validation.
The way the IFC Validator works for someone that is to validate it´s file is:
- Enter the validation webb site and log in
- The consultant/architect choses discipline
- Drag and drop the current file into a field in the browser
- Validation result is received within in 30s (even for large files)
- The result can be exported to different formats, excel BCF
The IFC Validator has no limits concerning number users or file sizes and have several more advantages;
• Up to 80% time savings
• It´s Webb-based - No local installations are required, no files are stored in the service
• Automated validation - No manual work tasks
• It´s an engaging service - Client and project management can verify mandated information
• Its flexibility allows validation of different mandates, classification systems and client specific requirements
• It´s robust performance secures safe usage for all sizes of projects
Savings with the IFC validator is calculated with these parameters:
• X involved disciplines that perform validation
• Y information reviews per month
• Z hours for current method for information reviews
• A Euro/hour for consultants and architects
• B months project time
The formula to calculate the savings:
- (Amount of information reviews per month) x (Amount of months project time) => Total amount of information reviews
- (Total amount of information reviews) x (Hours for current method for information reviews) x (Amount of Euro/hour for consultants and architects) => Total cost for information reviews with current methods
- (Total cost for information reviews with current methods) – (The prize for IFC Validator) => Saving for the project.
In a medium sized project, Sergelgatan this translates into real money:
• 5st disciplins
• 2 information reviews per month
• 40 hour/ information review with current method and 90Euro/hour for consultants and architects
• 7 months project time
• (14 information reviews) x (40hours/review) x (90Euro/hour) = 50 000Euro
Price for IFC Validator: 70 00Euro
SAVINGS FOR THE PROJECT:
50.000-7.000 = 43.000 Euro.
IFC format is ensured in relation to naming and content.
